In the far future, when humanity is close to extinction, the earth is populated by many different (but still connected) species. Some children are made in factories; some are hybrids crossed with other animals and even others are partly plants. All the kids of these species get taken care of by “Mothers” who all share one memory and consciousness. The survival of humans is based only on the interbreeding between these species.
This book is separated into different chapters. All chapters are different stories (even though all stories are interconnected). The chapters vary widely in plot, perspective and characters. Some of the chapters contradict each other, what might be a difficulty for some. If you like speculative, sci-fi stories you might like this one. But you have to trust the process because the stories do feel confused and disconnected from each other. The book explores some very interesting ideas about humanity, nature and our future. Did I understand everything in the book? Probably not, but it does not take away from the enjoyable experience I had reading it. So, for everyone who likes slightly disorienting dystopias that are unusual, this book is the perfect pick.
